Children’s sermon: Jesus is God’s Son

Another object lesson based on the doctrinal summaries in the Disciple’s Study Bible.

SCRIPTURES: John 1:1-2, John 14:8-9

OBJECT: a picture of a father and son

In our next three times together, I’m going to be talking about Jesus. Now we all know about Jesus, don’t we? You’ve probably sung songs like “Jesus Loves Me” since before you can remember. But not everyone in the world agrees on who Jesus really is. That’s what I’d like us to think about.

One of the most important things to understand about Jesus is that He is the Son of God. We usually think about Jesus’ life beginning when He was born in a stable in Bethlehem. That was the start of His life here on earth, but that was not the start of Jesus’ life. The book of John tells us that Jesus is God, and that He was with God the Father before the beginning of time.

This was one of the hardest things for people to understand when Jesus was here on earth. He looked just like one of them. How could He be God?

Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life here on earth. Nobody but God could do that. When He prayed, He sometimes called God “Abba,” a word that means “Daddy.” Nobody but God’s own Son would do that. The people even recognized when Jesus taught and preached that there was something different about Him. They were amazed that He taught “with authority.” He explained the Word of God like nobody else could, because He was God!

I brought a picture of a father and a son. Sometimes people don’t look that much like their mothers or their fathers. But at other times you can just look at the face of a child and know right away who his father is, because they look so much alike.

One day one of Jesus’ disciples, Philip, said, “Lord, show us the Father…” Jesus answered him, “Don’t you know me, Philip?…Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father…” He wanted the disciples to understand that when they looked at His life, they could see what God was like.

Do you ever wish you could see God? Do you wish you could know what God is like? There is much about God we cannot understand, but there’s a lot we can know. One of the best ways to know God is to look at Jesus.
