Children’s sermon: The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus

Another in my series of children’s sermons based on the doctrinal summaries in the Disciple’s Study Bible.

SCRIPTURE: John 14:26

OBJECT: a locket with a picture inside

We talked last time about Who the Holy Spirit is. In the next two messages, I want to look at what He does.

The Holy Spirit has always had a very close relationship to Jesus. He came down like a dove on Jesus when Jesus was baptized. Throughout His ministry, Jesus was guided and helped by the Holy Spirit. The gospel of John tells us that Jesus could obey His Father perfectly all the time because He was perfectly filled with the Spirit all the time. (John 3:34)

The Holy Spirit did not come to live inside all believers until after Jesus died, rose and went back to heaven. Now the Spirit’s main job is to help us better understand and love Jesus. The Holy Spirit’s work is a little bit like a locket. A woman puts a picture of someone she loves inside a locket. She wears the locket so she can have that picture close to her heart. The picture inside the locket reminds her of that special person.

God sent the Holy Spirit to remind us of Jesus. He also helps us understand the Bible so we can know how Jesus wants us to live. In John 14:26 Jesus says, “…The Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

When the Holy Spirit reminds us of Jesus and helps us love Jesus, we want to live for Him. The Holy Spirit helps us do that, too. We’ll look more at that next time.

  1. Denise,

With tears in my eyes, I just read your blog. You will never know what your words meant to me. I would really love to talk to you or correspond with you with the above email address. I have retired from the public school system and am now a counselor at Owensboro Community & Technical College. I was impressed by what you said about me, but more so about the lesson that you and your family experienced. Thanks so much for making a 60 year old man shed tears of joy.

    Your friendly P.E. Teacher,
    GG Talbott

  4. I looked at the notes on the Childrens message – 7 nov 2006, on what the holy spirit does. Is it possible to get the other 2 parts – who he is and 2nd part of what He does. The story you wrote was a real blessing and I would love to hear your other comments. I am wanting to teach our children more about the Holy Spirit as we are also studying the Fruit of the Spirit.
    thanks
