Children’s sermon: The Holy Spirit–Who is He?

Another children’s sermon based on the doctrinal summaries in the Disciple’s Study Bible.

SCRIPTURES: Genesis 1:2, John 14:23

OBJECT: nose-and-glasses disguise

I want us to talk for our next few times together about the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it seems like we talk only about God the Father and Jesus the Son. We act as if it’s hard to understand Who the Holy Spirit is. (put on nose an glasses) We act as if He’s wearing some kind of disguise. (remove nose and glasses) But He’s not in disguise! He wants us to know Him and love Him. So Who exactly is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. You see, we worship one God, but He is really three different Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It’s kind of like if I could have three heads and three different personalities instead of just one.

The Holy Spirit has always existed, like God the Father and Jesus have always been. People have learned about the Holy Spirit over time. The very first book in the Bible, Genesis, says that in the beginning of time, before God made our world, “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” There are other mentions of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, but it’s not until the book of Acts in the New Testament that He comes to live in the spirits of all Christians. (Acts 2)

To really understand Who the Holy Spirit is, we need to read John 14:23. Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will obey My teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

When we become Christians, the Holy Spirit makes His home in us. It’s like having God the Father and Jesus the Son move into our lives to stay. If the Holy Spirit had a face, it would be the face of Jesus, to smile on us and say, “I love you.” If He had arms, they would be the arms of our heavenly Father to hold us in His love.

Who is the Holy Spirit? He is God with us–always.

  1. Denise,
I’m a pastor and was looking for children’s sermons, last minute, this morning. Found this one and it goes along with my message this morning.

Anyway, GREAT BLOG! If you don’t mind, I’m going to link to it from mine and tell people they should come read.
