Children’s sermon: Evangelism

Another children's sermon based on the doctrinal summaries in the Disciple's Study Bible.
Scripture: Matthew 10:7-8

Object: cookies to share with the children

Today I'd like us to talk about evangelism. That's a pretty big word. What is evangelism? It's a planned effort to tell unbelievers about Jesus in the hope that they'll believe. Very simply, it's sharing Jesus.

Now sometimes you may hear of someone who is called "an evangelist." By that we mean that the person is a preacher who goes from place to place preaching the gospel. But evangelism is not just for those preachers called evangelists. It's for everyone! Every Christian should be an evangelist, because we all should be sharing Jesus with others.

One reason we share is to glorify God, because everything we do should be to glorify Him. We also need to tell others about Jesus because Jesus has told us to, and if we love Him we'll want to obey Him. A third reason we should want to share the good news is that we care about the people who need to hear it. In Matthew 10 Jesus says, "As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near'…Freely you have received, freely give."

Jesus wants us to tell people about Him as we go about our day-to-day lives. And He wants us to remember that our salvation is a free gift. Because He's given that gift to us, we should want to share it with others.

I brought some cookies with me today. Would you like me to share them with you? I'm sure you would! And I'm going to, because I like these cookies and I like you. I don't want to keep them all for myself. I want you to enjoy them, too.

If I can share cookies with my friends, I certainly need to be able to share something much more important: the love of Jesus.
